There is evidence of mosaic pavement here from the 1st century which indicates early Roman occupation. Carcassonne prospered at that time as it was on the trading route between Toulouse and Narbonne. These buildings and walls came much later when the need for fortification originally was to protect the town from the Barbarian invasions.
